Open-source Ticket Request System

by Nivrutti Pethkar - October 31st, 2009

OTRS, an initialism for Open-source Ticket Request System, is a free and open-source trouble ticket system software package that a company, organization, or other entity can use to assign tickets to incoming queries and track further communications about them. It is a means of managing incoming inquiries, complaints, support requests, defect reports, and other communications.

The Open-source Ticket Request System (OTRS) is more than a mailing list notification system for ticket requests. Every ticket generated by the system has persistence or “history” showing what happened to the ticket within its life cycle. OTRS has the ability to merge multiple requests about the same incident, thus making it possible to work on an incident rather than on singular requests. It is a multiuser system which means that multiple agents may work simultaneously on the tickets in OTRS, reading the incoming messages, bringing them in order, and answering them. It is highly scalable, capable of handling thousands of tickets per day and a nearly unlimited number of simultaneously working agents.

What is Malware?

by shriram - October 31st, 2009

Malware, short for malicious software, is software designed to infiltrate a computer without the owner’s informed consent. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.[1] The term “computer virus” is sometimes used as a catch-all phrase to include all types of malware, including true viruses.

Malware is not the same as defective software, that is, software which has a legitimate purpose but contains harmful bugs.

Data-stealing malware

Data-stealing malware is a web threat that divests victims of personal and proprietary information with the intent of monetizing stolen data through direct use or underground distribution. Content security threats that fall under this umbrella include keyloggers, screen scrapers, spyware, adware, backdoors, and bots. The term does not refer to activities such as spam, phishing, DNS poisoning, SEO abuse, etc. However, when these threats result in file download or direct installation, as most hybrid attacks do, files that act as agents to proxy information will fall into the data-stealing malware category.

Characteristics of data-stealing malware

Does not leave traces of the event

* The malware is typically stored in a cache which is routinely flushed
* The malware may be installed via a drive-by-download process
* The website hosting the malware as well as the malware is generally temporary or rogue

Frequently changes and extends its functions

* It is difficult for antivirus software to detect final payload attributes due to the combinations of malware components
* The malware uses multiple file encryption levels

Thwarts Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) after successful installation

* There are no perceivable network anomalies
* The malware hides in web traffic
* The malware is stealthier in terms of traffic and resource use

Thwarts disk encryption

* Data is stolen during decryption and display
* The malware can record keystrokes, passwords, and screenshots

Thwarts Data Loss Prevention (DLP)

* Leakage protection hinges on metadata tagging, not everything is tagged
* Miscreants can use encryption to port data

Prevention From Iframe attack.

by Harshal - October 31st, 2009

Now a days the most challenging malware attack on the world wide web is the iframe attack.Let’s see what exactly the iframe attack is and how can we prevent our website from being infected by iframe.

What is Iframe:-

An IFrame stands for “inline frame” is just a way of loading one web page inside another, usually from a different server. That can be useful for building online applications. But malware writers can make the included page just one pixel square – meaning you can’t even see it’s there and execute the JavaScript that will run automatically from that included page so that  it looks something like %6C%20%66%72%61%6D%65%62%6F – leaving no obvious clue that it’s malicious.

How can the
Iframe attacks be stopped?:-

Sites that cache searches must improve their input checking, and server operators can search for IFrame exploit code. Google is trying to remove malware search results, and automatically detects some exploits and warns that “This site may harm your computer”. Windows users should make sure they have installed all security updates, and preferably upgrade to XP SP2 with IE7, or Vista.Running an active anti-malware guard can also help.
